چکیده

N egative pressure pulmonary edema is an uncommon complication of extubation of the trachea (>0.1%) mostly caused by laryngospasm (1). Upper airway obstruction from glottis closure leads to marked inspiratory efforts, which generate very negative intrathoracic pressure. This may cause pulmonary edema (1,2) and, rarely, hemoptysis (3,4). This report is the first to document both bronchoscopic and computed tomography (CT) findings consistent with alveolar hemorrhage and capillary failure in this setting.

Pulmonary haemorrhage associated with negative-pressure pulmonary oedema: a case report.

Negative-pressure pulmonary oedema caused by upper airway obstruction after tracheal extubation is well recognised, but extensive pulmonary haemorrhage is rare. We report a case of post-extubation, laryngospasm-induced pulmonary oedema with associated pulmonary haemorrhage. The patient required mechanical ventilation with high positive end-expiratory pressure.

Post extubation negative pressure pulmonary edema due to posterior mediastinal cyst in an infant.

A 3-month-old male child underwent uneventful inguinal herniotomy under general anesthesia. After extubation, airway obstruction followed by pulmonary edema appeared for which the baby was reintubated and ventilated. The baby made a complete recovery and extubated after about 2 h. A post-operative computed tomography scan revealed a posterior mediastinal cystic mass abutting the tracheal bifurc...

Pulmonary Edema and Hemorrhage after Aesthetic Nasal Surgery

Negative pressure pulmonary edema following tracheal extubation is an uncommon and life-threatening complication of patients undergoing endotracheal intubation and general anesthesia for surgical procedures. The common pattern in these cases is the occurrence of an episode of airway obstruction upon emergence from general anesthesia, usually caused by laryngospasm. Patients who are predisposed ...

Negative pressure pulmonary oedema: a rare complication following general anaesthesia.

An important cause of pulmonary oedema is Negative Pressure Pulmonary Oedema (NPPE) which characteristically develops soon after extubation from an endo-tracheal intubation. In this case report we identified a case of previously healthy man who was intubated for General Anaesthesia for extraction of impacted molar tooth. Soon after extubation he developed severe respiratory distress. Immediate ...

Mechanical insufflation-exsufflation in prevention of post-extubation acute respiratory failure: most welcome but must be used cautiously in critically ill patients

a study published in the previous issue of Critical Care, Gonçalves and colleagues [1] observed a 33% reduction in re-intubation rate in the study group, due to eff ective management of bronchial secretions. Current evidence favors early implementation of noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) in the post-extubation period to reduce re-intubation, especially in patients with hypercapnic respi...
